The Kaduna State chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its Zone One Chairman, Bashir Zakariya, who died in a motor accident along the Zaria-Kaduna expressway.
According to party officials, Zakariya was en route from Zaria to Kaduna when the tragic incident occurred. Though full details of the accident are yet to be confirmed, reports indicate that he died at the scene.
In a statement released by the SDP’s State Publicity Secretary, Darius Kurah, the late chairman was described as a dedicated leader who embodied integrity, courage, and commitment to democratic ideals.
“Zakariya stood firmly for the truth and was a passionate advocate for justice. His contributions to the growth of our party in Zone One and across Kaduna State were invaluable,” the statement read.
Kurah further noted that Zakariya’s dedication to grassroots mobilisation had seen him make the journey between Zaria and Kaduna on numerous occasions in recent years. His passing, he said, leaves a significant void in the party’s leadership within the region.
Party members have begun paying condolence visits to Zakariya’s family residence in Kaduna.
Meanwhile, the SDP has called on both the Kaduna State Government and federal road management authorities to take urgent steps in addressing the frequent accidents on the Zaria-Kaduna highway. The party emphasized the need for improved road safety measures to prevent further loss of lives.
