Sanwo-Olu Approves Allocation of 180 Shops to Displaced Alaba Traders
The Lagos State Government has approved the allocation of 180 shops to traders displaced by the ongoing redevelopment of the Alaba Transnational Market along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Ojo Local Government Area.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s approval paved the way for the presentation of provisional letters of allocation to the affected traders on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Lagos State Building Control Agency in Ikeja.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Olajide Babatunde, said the allocation process reflects the administration’s commitment to inclusive urban renewal and structured market redevelopment.
According to Babatunde, beneficiaries will receive formal letters of allocation upon payment of at least 25 per cent of the shop cost. He added that traders who make a 50 per cent down payment will reduce exposure to interest charges, with the outstanding balance payable within six months.
He explained that the redevelopment of Alaba Transnational Market is part of Lagos State’s broader urban regeneration strategy aimed at delivering modern trading facilities, improved safety standards, and enhanced commercial infrastructure.
“The Lagos State Government will look at the development plan of the market and build the access road to make it motorable,” Babatunde said, assuring traders that infrastructure concerns, particularly internal road networks, would be addressed.
The adviser disclosed that the completed Alaba market project will accommodate about 3,000 shops. He noted that the Sanwo-Olu administration, under its THEMES+ development agenda, is currently developing 21 markets across Lagos, including Alaba Rago, Katangua, Peluwura, and Jankara.
He described the allocation as part of the dividends of democracy, adding that the government remains focused on improving the trading environment and boosting economic activities across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, the Chairman of the Central Committee of Alaba Rago Market, Alhaji Mohammed Lajawa, commended the state government for proceeding with the allocation process.
He appealed for the timely completion of the market’s access roads to ease the movement of goods and enhance business operations once the redevelopment is completed.
The redevelopment of Alaba Transnational Market is expected to strengthen commercial activities along the Lagos-Badagry corridor and improve compliance with urban planning regulations in one of the state’s busiest trading hubs.
As Lagos continues its aggressive urban renewal drive, the allocation of 180 shops marks a significant step toward stabilising displaced traders and modernising critical commercial infrastructure.
