Reall signs New Agreement With IFC To Build Affordable Climate-Smart Homes In Africa And Asia.

It’s astonishing how fast #cities around the world are growing, with two out of every three people likely to be living in cities by 2050. We urgently need more #affordable and sustainably-driven housing around the globe – especially in Africa and South Asia, where most of this growth is projected to occur.

That’s why I’m very pleased with the agreement that IFC – International Finance Corporation just signed with Reall, a UK-based investor in climate-smart affordable housing, to explore ways to scale up financing for green, affordable housing developments in Africa and South Asia.

As the challenge of #climatechange grows, green, affordable housing must be part of the solution. The alternative – unplanned urbanization – is already exacerbating the problems of climate change. Residential buildings account for around 18 percent of total global energy-related CO2 emissions, making low-cost sustainable housing a key priority under the climate agenda. In this context, making sure people have access to decent, affordable housing – and housing that is climate-smart – is an important pillar for sustainable development.

Reall, partly funded by UK’s foreign-commonwealth-and-development-office and the Sweden’s focuses on delivering climate-smart housing to the bottom 40% in Asia and Africa and is a strong partner for IFC – International Finance Corporation. I look forward to working with Reall to help meet the critical, growing need for improved housing. With many thanks to Ian Shapiro and his team (Mark Atterton, Cameron Jassal) and the IFC team led by Rajat Malik, (Olayinka Charles Lawson, Linshuo Hao, Oumie Njie, Liz W.) for the great collaboration that got us here.
