The planned visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Abia State has been officially moved to a later date, following adjustments in the President’s itinerary. Originally scheduled for Friday, May 23, 2025, the visit was to feature the formal commissioning of the rehabilitated 6.7-kilometre Port Harcourt Road in Aba, along with the launch of the ambitious Abia Medical City initiative.
Abia’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed the development during a press briefing held in Umuahia on Tuesday. He cited President Tinubu’s demanding national schedule as the reason for the deferral, noting that a new date in June has been set for the events.
“President Tinubu was to inaugurate major infrastructure in Aba and preside over the groundbreaking of the Medical City project. Unfortunately, due to an overlap in commitments, we’ve had to reschedule to a later date next month,” Kanu explained.
While the high-profile presidential visit is on hold, the energy in Aba remains upbeat. A spontaneous citywide carnival is set to take place on Wednesday, May 21, as residents gear up to celebrate the strides made under Governor Alex Otti’s leadership. According to Kanu, the event is entirely community-led and carries no financial involvement from the state government.
“This is a grassroots celebration driven by the people of Aba themselves. It’s a powerful reflection of the public’s recognition of Governor Otti’s impact on local infrastructure and development,” he said.
Despite the delay in the formal ceremonies, excitement continues to build in the commercial hub of Abia, with locals eager to showcase the transformation their city has experienced in recent months.
