President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to attend a special joint session of the National Assembly on June 12, 2025, to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day. This announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session on Wednesday.
Akpabio revealed that the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro; and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, Senator Sunday Karimi, have been tasked with coordinating with their counterparts in the House of Representatives to finalize the program of activities for the event. He emphasized that President Tinubu has graciously agreed to attend the joint session in person.
June 12 holds significant importance in Nigeria’s political history, marking the anniversary of the 1993 presidential election, which was widely regarded as free and fair but was annulled by the then military regime. The election was won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola, and its annulment led to widespread protests and a prolonged struggle for democratic governance in the country.
The upcoming session is expected to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and underscore the government’s commitment to upholding democratic principles. Preparations for the event are underway, with the planning committee working diligently to ensure a successful commemoration.
