President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka on the occasion of his 91st birthday, commending his lasting contributions to Nigeria’s cultural and political development.
In a statement released through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the globally acclaimed playwright and activist as a “source of inspiration” whose works continue to shape intellectual and civic life both in Nigeria and abroad.
“Professor Soyinka is an uncommon patriot who has continued to demonstrate his undying love for our country,” the statement read. “I rejoice with him on reaching another milestone and commend his lifetime of service to our nation and humanity at large.”
President Tinubu praised Soyinka’s significant impact in the fields of literature, education, and advocacy, saying the 1986 Nobel Laureate remains one of Nigeria’s most influential cultural figures. According to him, Soyinka’s body of work and his steadfast commitment to democratic ideals have inspired generations of writers, scholars, and human rights activists.
“Even at the age of 91, his intellect and passion remain undiminished. His life continues to be a gift, not just to Nigeria, but to the world,” Tinubu stated.
Reflecting on their personal relationship, Tinubu acknowledged past collaborations with the esteemed writer and expressed appreciation for Soyinka’s efforts in championing national progress.
“As he begins the final decade leading up to his centenary, I wish Professor Wole Soyinka continued good health and many more years of meaningful engagement,” the President concluded.
