Law enforcement officials in Rivers State have uncovered a suspected child trafficking network and rescued a young woman reportedly held against her will in Aba, Abia State.
The police, acting on intelligence, launched a targeted operation that led to the arrest of two individuals allegedly involved in the illicit operation. Identified as Sunshine Hart (28) and Kingsley Ekocha (38), the suspects were apprehended in Aba on June 24.
During the operation, a 24-year-old woman, Regina Sunday who was said to be heavily pregnant at the time was rescued. Authorities reported that she later gave birth to a baby boy on June 30 at the Police Clinic in Port Harcourt, where both mother and child are now under medical care and reported to be in good health.
The state police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident in a statement released Monday, noting that the operation was the result of detailed investigative work.
“The Rivers State Police Command continues to intensify its crackdown on organized human trafficking rings through strategic intelligence gathering and coordinated enforcement,” Iringe-Koko stated.
She added that efforts are ongoing to locate and detain other individuals believed to be connected to the case.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to dismantling illegal operations that exploit vulnerable individuals. He encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities that may aid law enforcement efforts in addressing human trafficking and related offenses.
