The Oyo State Government has sealed off a collapsed building under construction in the Dugbe area of Ibadan, which was intended to house a popular restaurant. The building reportedly caved in during a rainstorm on Sunday night.
Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, stated that the action was taken to ensure the safety of lives and properties. He added that sealing off the site would allow the government to assess the situation and come up with an adequate report on the cause of the incident.
Preliminary investigations suggest that some of the building materials used for the construction appeared to be substandard and of low quality. An integrity test will be carried out on the collapsed building and on other branches of the restaurant in the state to avoid a recurrence.
Mr. Akin-Funmilayo emphasized that the outcome of the test would determine the next action of the government. He also mentioned that professionals from the Ministry of Works would carry out the integrity tests to ensure absolute professionalism.
The incident has raised concerns about building standards and regulatory compliance in the state. The government has reiterated its commitment to enforcing building codes and ensuring that all constructions meet the required standards to prevent such occurrences in the future.
