The Ondo State Government has demolished the memorial park erected in honour of worshippers killed during the 2022 attack on St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo.
The monument commissioned by the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in 2023—stood near the town’s historic palace but was flattened on the order of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa following objections from the Olowo-in-Council.
According to Chief Press Secretary Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, the decision stemmed from appeals by the Olowo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, and his traditional council, who argued that placing a memorial so close to the palace contravened local customs.
The community and palace authorities had previously expressed disapproval, stating that the late Akeredolu ignored their concerns and that protesters including youth groups had voiced opposition while the park was being planned and constructed .
In a statement, the palace affirmed its support for the demolition, assuring the public that the action was taken at its behest and urging stakeholders to address any grievances to traditional authorities rather than the governor. The palace also pledged to share further details on the matter in due course .
The original memorial commemorated the June 5, 2022 massacre when at least 40 worshippers were killed by gunmen during Pentecost Mass. Following widespread national outcry, Akeredolu approved the construction of a cenotaph at the site in 2023, engraved with the names of the victims as part of ongoing healing efforts.
The removal has rekindled debate on balancing cultural traditions with memorialisation. While the palace maintains that the demolition aligns with Owo heritage, many community members continue to mourn lost loved ones and seek ways to preserve their memory.
