A traditional ruler in Ogun State, the Olu of Isiun in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area, Oba Lawrence Odeyinka, has sent a petition to Governor Dapo Abiodun over the stoppage of the resuscitation of a 35-year-old secondary school in the area by suspected land grabbers.

The monarch, who spoke with journalists on Friday, said the school, Isiun High School, was built in 1980 by the administration of the late ex-governor Olabisi Onabanjo.

He recalled that the school was shut down in 1986 during the military administration of Brig. Gen. Oladipo Diya, forcing pupils in the area to travel to other communities for secondary education.

The monarch said the community decided to resuscitate the school as part of activities to mark its 70th anniversary. He, however, lamented that the plan was being hampered by land grabbers, who had encroached into the school land.

He, therefore, pleaded with the state government to intervene and help get the school running again.

He said, “Indigenes of the town in the diaspora and those in Nigeria are already donating towards the project. The government has come to inspect it. Months after the town erected a signboard to create awareness for the school, it was removed. Those we suspect are those that have been building houses on that land. We have been trying to reason with them for a while but they seem not to want to yield.”
