Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved a partnership with the Federal Government for the development of a workers’ housing estate in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area.
The governor, while receiving a delegation from the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) led by its Executive Director for Loans and Mortgage Services, Dr. Mohammed Sani Abdul, presented a Certificate of Occupancy for 10.1 hectares of land allocated for the project.
Oborevwori explained that his administration waived statutory charges worth about ₦200 million to fast-track the scheme, stressing that the initiative was aimed at easing the burden of rent on junior and middle-level workers in the state.
“This housing scheme is crucial because most of our workers spend a large part of their salaries on rent. I urge the Federal Mortgage Bank to deliver this project promptly and ensure it benefits those it is meant for,” he said.
The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for encouraging collaboration between federal agencies and state governments, promising full support to see the project through.
Responding, Abdul lauded Oborevwori’s commitment to workers’ welfare and infrastructural growth, particularly in Asaba and surrounding communities. He urged local councils in Delta to contribute to the National Housing Fund to allow the FMBN extend housing opportunities to rural areas.
The FMBN, he noted, has been driving affordable housing development for more than three decades, with ongoing projects in Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and other parts of Nigeria. He emphasized that the bank remains committed to bridging the country’s housing deficit, currently estimated between 20 and 22 million units.
“With the Renewed Hope Mega Mini-City initiative of the President, our focus is to provide affordable homes for Nigerians across all income brackets. Delta State is a strategic partner in this plan, and we are determined to make a meaningful impact here,” Abdul said.
