Chief Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere has said that no succeeding Lagos State governor has beaten Alhaji Lateef Jakande’s record of selflessness.

While eulogizing the former governor of Lagos State, the Afenifere leader stressed that Jakande was one of the founders of present day Nigeria, who during his days as journalist wrote to put any government in power on alert. He said that any of the problems that Nigeria had politically, he was one of those who contributed immensely, loyally and consistently to solving some of those problems through his various contributions.

In a chat with DAILY INDEPENDENT on Thursday, the elder statesman said that as a journalist the late governor was a fire brand and his articles were very illuminating and educative. He said that he was highly principled.

Adebanjo said, “Jakande was one of those who wrote to put any government in power on alert. He was a fearless writer and his colleagues in journalism had a great respect for him.

“He made immense contributions in his days in the Action Group and Afenifere. His contributions as a journalist were very educational. He was a respected member of the Action Group and Afenifere.

“As a governor the mark he made is still there till today, and no succeeding governor has ever beaten his record of selflessness. He never lived in a government house as governor and he never rode on a government car.”

Adding, “He lived a humble and simple life. When he became the governor of Lagos State he cancelled all the projects that were not popular, and accommodated everybody. The country will surely miss him. I commiserate with his family and Lagos people for this great loss.”
