The Federal Government has announced that its new “Renewed Hope Housing Programme” marks a significant departure from past housing initiatives, with a focus on national reach, large-scale development, and innovative financing.
According to Ahmed Dangiwa, the Minister for Housing and Urban Development, the program is a “comprehensive, structured response to decades of underinvestment and fragmented housing delivery.” Unlike previous projects, which he described as small, isolated schemes that delivered a few hundred units over many years, the Renewed Hope program is designed to create large-scale, integrated communities that serve high, middle, and low-income Nigerians. The program already has a presence in 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
One of the key differences highlighted by the Minister is the financing model. The government has moved away from an over-reliance on limited government budgets by adopting Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and blended financing. This approach has already mobilized over ₦70 billion in private capital, ensuring financial sustainability and faster delivery.
The program also emphasizes accessibility and transparency. For the first time, a “Digital Housing Portal” allows Nigerians both at home and abroad to apply for homes online, a process the Minister said is “fair, transparent, and technology-driven” with no middlemen.
To make homeownership more attainable, the government is offering single-digit interest rate mortgages, rent-to-own schemes with zero down payments, and repayment periods of up to 30 years through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN). The Minister noted that this is a historic step to open doors to millions of Nigerians.
In terms of execution, the government has broken ground on over 10,000 housing units in just two years, a pace that far exceeds the approximately 3,500 units delivered by previous administrations over an eight-year period. Dangiwa stated that this demonstrates “strong political will, better planning, and real results on the ground.”
The Minister concluded that the Renewed Hope Agenda is not simply about building houses but about building communities that serve as tools for wealth creation, job generation, and social stability.
