Nigeria and China have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in renewable energy, the digital economy, and agriculture as both countries celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations. The partnership, which began in 1971, has grown into a strategic alliance that supports infrastructure development, trade, and economic growth in Nigeria.
The renewed commitment was highlighted at a reception in Lagos marking the Chinese New Year and the 55th Anniversary of Nigeria–China diplomatic relations. Hon. Jaafaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria–China Relations, emphasized that the bilateral relationship is built on mutual respect, non-interference, and shared development goals.
Yakubu noted that China remains one of Nigeria’s key partners in areas such as infrastructure, technology transfer, industrialization, education, and cultural exchange. He pointed to significant achievements including major rail, road, and power projects, alongside growth in manufacturing and digital innovation.
The lawmaker also stressed the National Assembly’s dedication to strengthening legislative cooperation, improving bilateral frameworks, and promoting policies that attract investment, create jobs, and support long-term economic transformation. He highlighted future opportunities for collaboration in healthcare, renewable energy, science and technology, agriculture, and human capital development.
Ms. Yan Yuqing, Consul General of China in Lagos, reflected on 2025 as a milestone year for Nigeria–China relations. She mentioned increased high-level diplomatic engagements and expanding economic cooperation, including Nigeria’s participation in Chinese trade exhibitions and the rise of Chinese investment across the country.
Key projects resulting from the partnership include the Abuja Greater Water Supply Project, which now provides potable water to approximately three million people, and increased capacity at the Lekki Deep Sea Port. Passenger and freight traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Railway and Lagos Light Rail also reached record levels, improving mobility and cargo transportation.
Yuqing highlighted China’s steady economic growth, surpassing RMB 140 trillion in GDP, and emphasized China’s commitment to global development and shared opportunities with Nigeria and Africa. She further noted expanding cooperation between Chinese provinces and Nigerian states, cultural and educational exchanges through Confucius Institute programs, and charitable initiatives supporting cataract patients and low-income households across Nigeria.
