Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has pledged the sum of ₦1 billion to support residents affected by the recent flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area.
The governor made the declaration during an assessment tour of the flood-stricken communities on Monday, where he inspected damaged homes and sympathised with displaced families. Bago urged residents to avoid settling close to waterways in order to minimise risks to life and property during flooding incidents.
According to the governor, the state government is committed to ensuring that all financial and material donations whether from the federal government, philanthropic individuals, agencies, or donor organisations will be applied strictly for the welfare of affected persons.
“The state government is committing one billion naira to provide relief and support for the victims. Every donation made will be used transparently for the purpose intended,” Bago said.
He also expressed appreciation to those who have extended support to the victims, and assured that comprehensive efforts are underway to assist both directly and indirectly affected individuals with resettlement.
In a related appeal, the governor called on Islamic scholars in the area to maintain proper records of pupils under their tutelage, to aid in tracing children who may go missing during emergencies.
