In response to the devastating floods that recently struck Mokwa in Niger State, resulting in over 200 fatalities and leaving hundreds missing, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified efforts to mitigate the impact of impending floods across Nigeria.
NEMA has deployed advocacy teams to 15 high-risk states, including Kogi, Imo, Enugu, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Zamfara, Katsina, and the Federal Capital Territory. These teams are tasked with educating residents about flood risks and urging those in vulnerable areas to relocate to safer zones.
The recent tragedy in Mokwa, where heavy rainfall led to catastrophic flooding, underscores the urgency of these measures. Many victims had constructed homes in gully-prone areas, exacerbating the disaster’s impact.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency had previously issued warnings predicting heavy storms in several states, including Niger. However, the scale of the Mokwa flooding was unprecedented, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and proactive measures.
As Nigeria’s rainy season progresses, NEMA continues to collaborate with state and local agencies to enhance community preparedness and resilience against flooding. Residents are encouraged to heed official warnings and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
