The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, has carried out an extensive assessment of flood damage across six wards in Apapa Local Government Area following severe rainfall that submerged homes, businesses, and vital infrastructure.
The operation, which took place on Friday, August 22, covered Ward E, Ward F, Ward G, Ward H, Ward I, and Ward J. NEMA officials worked closely with local ward representatives from neighborhoods including Ladejobi, Arewa, Ojora, Baale Street, Oke-Oja, Church Street, Zion Street, and Adeleye.
According to a statement released by NEMA on their official X account, the purpose of the assessment was to gauge the extent of the damage, identify the root causes of the flooding, record the number of people and properties affected, understand the urgent needs of residents, and educate communities about the implications of weather forecasts issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). The agency also emphasized the importance of proactive, collective efforts to mitigate future risks.
The assessment revealed that poor drainage systems and inadequate waste management were the primary reasons behind the flooding. Many drainage channels were clogged due to improper disposal of refuse, preventing stormwater from flowing into larger canals and causing rainwater to overflow into streets and homes.
As a result, residential houses, shops, roads, bridges, schools, and other key infrastructure were inundated, leaving many residents facing significant losses.
Assistant Director Adenike Ibitayo, who heads NEMA’s Search and Rescue division and led the assessment team, warned about the health dangers brought on by the flooding. “Besides disrupting daily life, the floods raise the risk of waterborne illnesses and infections due to poor waste disposal,” she said.
With further heavy rains expected, NEMA has urged residents of Apapa LGA to stay alert and take precautions to protect themselves and their properties.
