The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano has recovered 112 kilograms of cannabis following a road crash along the Zaria–Kano Expressway.
The incident occurred at Gadar Tamburawa around 6 a.m. on September 6, when a Volkswagen Golf collided with a truck. According to a statement issued by the NDLEA State Command’s spokesperson, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, patrol officers rushed to the scene to rescue the victims.
The operatives removed the car’s windscreen and doors to extricate the driver and passenger. The passenger attempted to escape but was apprehended immediately. A search of the vehicle uncovered 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa weighing a total of 112kg.
Muhammad-Maigatari disclosed that the driver, now receiving medical treatment, admitted to representing the consignor and confessed to making similar deliveries both within and outside Kano. He also acknowledged using a one-way route in a bid to avoid NDLEA checkpoints.
The crash left the truck driver with a fracture, the statement added. NDLEA said the case involved both traffic violations and drug trafficking.
The State Commander, Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, assured that those involved would be prosecuted. He praised the swift response of the patrol officers, describing it as a reflection of the leadership of NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.).
The command urged the public to avoid drug trafficking and to report any suspicious movements of illicit substances.
