Legislative proceedings at the National Assembly have been put on hold following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Sunday.
In a statement issued Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, it was confirmed that both chambers the Senate and House of Representatives have jointly agreed to suspend all legislative activities until Tuesday, July 22.
According to the statement, the decision was made out of respect for the late leader’s contributions to the country, both as military Head of State (1983–1985) and as a two-term civilian president (2015–2023).
“The President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives have directed the immediate suspension of all legislative engagements at the National Assembly until Tuesday, 22nd July,” the statement read.
It further noted that condolences have been extended to the government and people of Nigeria, the government of Katsina State Buhari’s home state and members of the former president’s family.
Lawmakers have also been encouraged to make necessary adjustments to their schedules in order to participate in national burial activities planned in Buhari’s honour.
President Buhari died at the age of 82 and is remembered for his emphasis on national unity, anti-corruption stance, and decades of public service.
