A member of the House of Representatives, Abubakar Hassan Nalaraba, has disbursed a ₦100 million scholarship grant to more than 1,000 indigent students from his Awe/Doma/Keana federal constituency in Nasarawa State.
The initiative, unveiled at a ceremony in Lafia over the weekend, is aimed at easing the financial burden on students from poor households enrolled in various tertiary institutions across the country.
Speaking at the event, the Aren Eggon, Justice Ahmed Ubangari Alaku (rtd), urged political leaders to prioritise programmes that fight poverty and expand educational opportunities. He emphasised the importance of investing in the future of underprivileged young people.
The Chairman of the Scholarship Grants Committee, Professor Amirkpa Oyigbenu, described the intervention as a significant contribution to education in the state.
In his remarks, Nalaraba explained that the selection of beneficiaries was conducted transparently to ensure that only students from disadvantaged backgrounds benefitted, irrespective of political or religious affiliation.
Some recipients, including Abimiku Salvation and Bushirat Safyanu, expressed gratitude, saying the ₦100,000 cash support each had received came at a time when they were close to abandoning their studies due to financial hardship.
Also speaking, the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Aliyu Bello, commended Nalaraba for what he described as people-focused representation, noting that the scholarship would have a lasting impact on many families in the constituency.
