Eight days following the catastrophic floods that devastated Mokwa, the local government seat in Niger State, another body identified only as an adult male was discovered on Thursday in a farm beside the bypass near a dam-identified area.
The resident who spotted the body described it as heavily decomposed and unrecognizable. Authorities say it was buried at the discovery site, as the condition of the remains made moving it impractical .
This recovery is the latest in a grim sequence following the late-May floods that submerged much of Mokwa, resulting in over 200 confirmed fatalities and leaving numerous others missing . The disaster, triggered by torrential rainfall and a dam collapse, overwhelmed homes, infrastructure, and farmland across the town.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) initially reported 161 deaths, but updated figures now reflect the flood’s worsening toll. Delays in locating victims are attributed to treacherous conditions debris-choked waterways and inaccessible farm areas hindering search efforts.
As floodwaters continue to recede, residents and search teams remain on high alert, aware that more bodies could surface in coming days. The ongoing challenge in Mokwa underscores both the disaster’s scale and its enduring human impact.
