Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has refuted claims by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) that the explosion near the Mogadishu military barracks in Abuja on Monday was a suicide bombing. According to Wike, the incident was an accidental detonation involving a civilian who unknowingly carried explosives from a quarry site
According to Minister Wike, the individual involved had taken explosives from a quarry site and placed them in his pocket, leading to an unintended detonation. He emphasized that security agencies did not classify the incident as a suicide bombing and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation that could cause unnecessary fear among residents.
While NEMA has released its findings, both the military and police have yet to confirm the cause of the explosion, indicating that investigations are still ongoing.
In a separate incident, Minister Wike has pledged to cover the medical expenses of victims involved in a truck explosion near Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway. The accident, which occurred on March 19, resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals and left over 30 others with severe burns. Wike directed the Mandate Secretary on Health and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, to ensure prompt treatment for the injured.
These events highlight the importance of accurate information dissemination and the need for continued vigilance and safety measures within the Federal Capital Territory.
