Three major markets in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, have been temporarily shut following the death of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on Sunday evening.
In a statement issued by the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon. Dare Alebiosu, the closure was described as a traditional rite observed in honour of the departed monarch, allowing indigenes to mourn the revered royal figure.
The affected markets Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje ceased operations beginning Monday, July 14, 2025.
“Following the announcement of the passing of our highly revered royal father, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona CFR, the Ijebu-Ode Local Government hereby declares the temporary closure of all major markets as a mark of respect for our departed Kabiyesi,” the statement read.
Alebiosu added that the decision aligns with long-standing cultural practices in Ijebuland, calling on traders and residents to observe the closure peacefully.
He noted that a date for the reopening of the markets would be communicated after due consultations with traditional authorities.
Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for over six decades, was widely regarded as one of the most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria. His burial is scheduled to take place in Ijebu today.
