The hike in food prices since the beginning of 2024 has escalated, with goods getting different price tags daily, plunging many Nigerians deeper into poverty and affecting access to staple foods.

Market leaders from Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, and Ogun states expressed their concerns over the consistent surge in food prices, exacerbating hunger among citizens.

Medinah Ibrahim, leader of the market women association in Ado-Ekiti, highlighted the challenges traders face, noting that prices of almost all products and foodstuffs have increased by more than 30%.

She emphasized the need for urgent intervention to prevent more people from slipping below the poverty line.

Mopelola Olaoluwa, the Iyalaje of Provision Goods traders, echoed Ibrahim’s sentiments, stating that the sudden price hikes have led to a decline in customer patronage, making business difficult to sustain.

Monisola Salawu, Vice-President of the Raw Goods Traders, lamented the unbearable hardship, noting significant price increases in items like rice and beans, making it difficult for families to afford rent and other essentials.

The Erelu Iyaloja General of Akureland, Mrs. Adefunmilayo Adekanye, described the situation as terrible and unprecedented, calling for urgent government intervention to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

Pepper and tomato sellers in Osun State also expressed concern, noting that major dealers are at risk of running out of business if the situation persists due to unprecedented price changes caused by insecurity in the northern part of the country.
