Residents of Magodo Phase II in Lagos State have raised concerns over renewed construction activities on a wetland behind their estate, warning of potential flooding, infrastructure damage and safety risks.
In a video, residents expressed concern over trucks and heavy-duty equipment attempting to access the construction site through their estate, saying the activities could disrupt daily life and damage roads and other infrastructure.
They also opposed the use of the estate as an access route to the site, arguing that the arrangement could expose residents to additional risks.
The residents warned that developing the wetland could worsen flooding because of its role in draining stormwater from the surrounding area.
They called on the Lagos State Government to intervene, protect the wetland and ensure that an alternative access route is provided without putting the community at risk.
The residents are seeking measures to protect their homes, preserve essential drainage functions and prevent further disruption to their neighbourhood.
The concerns highlight the need for the relevant authorities to assess the environmental implications of the development, verify the project’s approvals and address residents’ safety concerns.
