The Lagos State Government has revealed that property losses from fire outbreaks in the state during 2024 totaled approximately N19.52 billion.
This disclosure came from the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, during a press briefing held as part of the activities marking the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.
According to the commissioner, a total of 450 individuals were rescued from various fire incidents, while 91 lives were tragically lost. However, firefighting efforts helped save assets worth over N117 billion from destruction.
Mr. Oyerinde highlighted the administration’s achievements in enhancing emergency response mechanisms and fostering stronger collaboration among government agencies. He also pointed to notable improvements in the state’s security structure, including the integration of the Nigerian Forest Security Service into Lagos’ security framework.
“In a move to reinforce border security and improve public safety,” Oyerinde said, “we brought on board 100 additional security personnel and increased the welfare packages for operatives by doubling their allowances.”
The state also invested in security infrastructure, distributing 320 units of essential equipment such as bulletproof vests, batons, flashlights, and other protective gear to frontline personnel.
In terms of fire safety improvements, two new fire stations were commissioned in Ijegun-Egba and Ijede, while ongoing construction continues in other key locations like Kosofe, Yaba, and Ikotun. To support firefighting efforts, industrial-grade boreholes have been established in Alausa, Isolo, Ajegunle, Ebute-Elefun, and Ogombo.
Between January 2024 and March 2025, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded to over 2,000 emergency cases, according to the commissioner. He added that the agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit handled 707 medical emergencies and provided aid to nearly 5,000 accident victims during the period.
