Kwara State Government has issued a stern directive to all contractors involved in its infrastructure projects following a fatal incident at the Kwara Hotel renovation site, where a fence collapse last Tuesday claimed three lives and left one person seriously injured

At a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, emphasized the state’s zero‑tolerance policy toward safety violations, quality control, and professional conduct. Present were heads of ministries, departments, agencies, and the involved contractors.

The call to action was prompted by last Tuesday’s fence collapse at the renovation site handled by Craneburg Construction Company, which resulted in two deaths and one severe injury .

Dr. Ogunsola reiterated the importance of comprehensive risk assessments, correct use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to emergency response protocols. He underscored that health and safety obligations are part of contractors’ agreements with the state, affirming that “every human life is important, every Nigerian is important, every Kwaran is important”.

A minute of silence was held for the victims, and Kunle Gbadeyan, the ministry’s Press Secretary, confirmed that insurance processing for the families is ongoing. Attendance included Commissioner Damilola Yusuf‑Adelodun (Business, Innovation & Technology), GIS Chairman Sulyman AbdulKareem, Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye, and Permanent Secretary Riskat Abdulazeez.

Commissioner Yusuf‑Adelodun stressed the need for clear safety signage at all construction sites, while GIS Chairman, AbdulKareem emphasized that approved building plans should be displayed on-site for inspection.

The affected area in Ilorin’s GRA has been secured by police and private security to prevent unauthorized access .ty measures, implement stringent site inspections, and pursue accountability. As compensation for the bereaved families progresses and monitoring steps strengthen, Kwara is signaling a new era of prioritizing lives over construction speed in its infrastructural vision.
