The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has launched a formal investigation into the actions of Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as KWAM 1, following a controversial incident at a local airport involving a ValueJet flight.
According to NCAA officials, the artist allegedly disrupted the scheduled departure of ValueJet flight VK201, prompting widespread concern over airport security and regulatory compliance. The agency described the act as one that, in many jurisdictions, could be considered a serious security breach.
Speaking during a television interview on Sunday, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, stated, “In many parts of the world, what occurred would be classified under acts that pose threats to aviation safety. Preventing an aircraft from departing without lawful authority is a grave offense.”
Achimugu confirmed that an internal inquiry is underway to determine how the singer accessed the restricted area where the disruption occurred. He stressed that those found to have enabled the breach, directly or indirectly, would be held accountable.
Further complicating the matter, the NCAA has submitted a formal petition to the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police, urging a full criminal investigation under existing civil aviation laws. KWAM 1 has since issued a public apology for the incident but has been placed on a temporary no-fly list pending the outcome of the probe.
Questions have also been raised over the conduct of air traffic control during the incident, with investigators expected to review whether the pilot was cleared for departure under appropriate safety protocols.
The development has sparked a broader conversation on enforcement of aviation regulations and the need to maintain strict security standards across Nigeria’s airports.
