The Kaduna State House of Assembly is reviewing a bill aimed at protecting tenants from excessive residential rent charges while safeguarding landlords’ interests.

Sponsored by Speaker Yusuf Dahiru Liman, the proposal is undergoing committee consideration, with stakeholder consultations expected to shape its final provisions.

Tenants, landlords, developers, estate professionals and civil society organisations are among those invited to contribute to the process.

The initiative follows concerns that accommodation expenses are placing increasing pressure on workers, students, low-income households and young families.

Lawmakers intend to examine how rental regulation could improve certainty in tenancy arrangements without discouraging investment in residential housing.

The proposal remains under consideration; the report does not establish that new rent restrictions have taken effect. It also does not specify a proposed rent ceiling, permitted percentage increase or commencement date.

Further engagement will determine the scope of the legislation before the Assembly concludes its deliberations.
