The Jigawa State Government has unveiled plans to establish a small-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing plant as part of its efforts to improve healthcare delivery, ensure access to essential medicines, and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
This was made known on Thursday by the General Manager of Jigawa State Pharmaceutical Company (JIPHARMA), Nasiru Alhassan, during a review of the company’s performance under Governor Umar Namadi’s administration over the past two years.
According to Alhassan, the facility will be located in the Gagarawa industrial layout, with construction set to begin soon. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce basic drugs such as Vitamin C tablets, paracetamol, and medicinal syrups.
He emphasized that the initiative marks a major milestone for the state’s healthcare sector. “The proposed factory will not only boost access to quality medicines in Jigawa but also generate employment and contribute to economic development,” Alhassan said.
The pharmaceutical company, which has been recording significant growth, attributed its recent success to the supportive policies of the current administration. “Over the last two years, we’ve seen increased sales driven by a growing number of registered patients and the state’s health insurance scheme that provides free access to essential drugs,” Alhassan noted.
He also revealed that 13 other states have visited Jigawa to study JIPHARMA’s model, a sign of the company’s growing influence in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector. “The interest from across the country highlights our reputation and impact,” he added.
Alhassan stated that by law, all public hospitals in the state are mandated to procure their medicines through JIPHARMA, giving the company a significant market share. Currently, JIPHARMA supplies up to 95 percent of the drugs used in state-owned healthcare facilities.
To further expand its capabilities, the company has also invested N900 million in the construction of a modern headquarters in Dutse. “This new facility will enhance our ability to serve Jigawa and potentially expand to other regions,” Alhassan said.
He acknowledged the continued support of the State Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders, crediting their cooperation for the company’s steady progress.
