The Jigawa State Government has approved a sum of N19.6 billion for the construction of 560 new housing units across nine local government areas, as part of efforts to address the state’s housing deficit and promote urban development.
The Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa, announced the development while briefing reporters in Dutse following a meeting of the State Executive Council. He stated that the project represents the second phase of the administration’s Mass Housing Estate initiative, aimed at providing affordable accommodation and improving living standards across the state.
The planned units will include a mix of three-bedroom detached houses and two-bedroom semi-detached homes, each with perimeter fencing, to be built in Babura, Birnin Kudu, Dutse, Gumel, Hadejia, Kafin Hausa, Kazaure, Maigatari, and Ringim.
“This initiative is in line with Governor Umar Namadi’s vision for inclusive development, sustainable urban planning and economic growth,” Musa said.
According to the commissioner, the project is not only targeted at solving housing challenges but is also expected to stimulate economic activity in the state through job creation and related construction services.
The Association of Housing Corporations of Nigeria (AHCN) praised the development, describing it as a progressive move toward reducing housing shortages in Nigeria. In a statement, AHCN encouraged other state governments to replicate Jigawa’s approach by empowering their housing agencies with adequate funding and support.
“The approval of N19.6 billion for mass housing clearly reflects the Namadi administration’s commitment to addressing the housing gap,” the association said. “We commend the state government for assigning the execution of the project to the Jigawa State Housing Authority and urge a transparent and collaborative approach, possibly involving tested private sector partners.”
The AHCN also noted that this phase follows the successful delivery of 500 units under Phase I of the housing programme last year. The body emphasized that investments of this scale not only expand access to decent housing but also contribute to urban renewal, employment generation, and improved quality of life.
The Jigawa State Housing Authority will oversee the execution of the new project on behalf of the government.
