The Federal Government has announced a scheduled closure of the Ijora-Marine Bridge in Lagos starting Sunday, May 18, to facilitate essential repair work expected to span three weeks.
According to a public statement issued by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the maintenance operation is set to commence at 7:00 a.m. and will involve both partial and full closures of various segments of the bridge.
The planned works include lifting sections of the bridge deck to replace damaged bearings and undertake other structural maintenance tasks aimed at improving overall safety and comfort for road users.
Mrs. Kesha emphasized the importance of the repairs, noting that the intervention is necessary to maintain the integrity of the infrastructure and prevent long-term hazards.
“We are aware this will cause temporary inconvenience, but the safety and durability of the bridge take precedence,” she stated.
Traffic diversions have already been mapped out in coordination with traffic management authorities to minimize disruptions. Road safety personnel will also be deployed to direct commuters and ensure smoother traffic movement throughout the duration of the works.
Residents, business owners, and daily commuters have been advised to adjust their schedules and plan travel routes accordingly to avoid delays.
The Ministry assured the public that appropriate signage and traffic control devices would be in place to guide motorists, and expressed gratitude for the public’s anticipated cooperation.
“We appeal for patience and support as we carry out these crucial works. Our goal is to deliver a safer, stronger bridge for everyone,” Kesha concluded.
