Sokoto Brings Federal and State Leaders Together to Address Nigeria’s Housing Crisis
Sokoto State is hosting federal and state housing officials, mortgage institutions, land administrators and private developers for the 15th Meeting of the National Council on Lands, Housing and Urban Development, as stakeholders examine ways to improve housing delivery across Nigeria.
The meeting opened on Monday, October 12, 2026, at Al-Mustapha Hall, Sokoto Guest Inn, and is scheduled to run until October 16.
According to a statement issued by Adamu Aminu, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, the council is chaired by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Muttaqa Rabe Darma, PhD. The Minister of State, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, is co-chairing the meeting, while the Permanent Secretary, Shuaib M. L. Belgore, is leading the technical session.
The gathering brings together policymakers and key participants in the housing sector to discuss measures that could improve access to decent and affordable homes.
Mortgage Access and Land Reforms Take Centre Stage
This year’s meeting is themed “Strengthening Mortgage, Land and Institutional Systems for Accelerated and Inclusive Housing Delivery.”
The discussions focus on some of the major challenges affecting Nigeria’s housing sector, including access to mortgage financing, land administration and the effectiveness of institutions responsible for housing development.
Participants are expected to examine ways to widen access to housing finance, improve land administration systems and strengthen coordination among relevant institutions.
These issues are central to efforts to make homeownership more attainable and ensure that housing programmes respond to the needs of Nigerians across different income groups.
Renewed Hope Housing Programme Under Review
The council will also consider how to translate the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Cities and Estates initiative into housing opportunities that Nigerians can afford.
The programme forms part of the government’s wider housing agenda, with the meeting providing an opportunity for federal and state stakeholders to discuss the systems and partnerships needed to improve delivery.
The emphasis on mortgage access, land reforms and institutional capacity reflects the importance of addressing multiple barriers to housing at the same time.
Sokoto Reaffirms Commitment to Urban Development
Sokoto State’s hosting of the national meeting highlights its commitment to urban development and participation in discussions about the future of housing in Nigeria.
For the wider country, the meeting provides a platform for government officials, housing institutions and private-sector participants to exchange ideas on improving housing delivery and developing stronger communities.
The council’s deliberations are expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen housing systems, expand access to affordable homes and promote more inclusive urban development across Nigeria.
