The Nasarawa state government has begun demolishing over 200 illegal structures spread across the 13 local government areas of the state in efforts to tackle flooding in the state.

Wada Yahaya, the Managing Director, Nasarawa State Urban Development Board, said the demolition of illegal structures was to tackle the persistence of flood across the state, noting that the structures were marked for demolition because they were built on waterways thereby risking the lives of the citizens in the state.

“The effect of the global warming is affecting residents of the state in the area of flooding and because of that we are going to embark on demolition of over 200 illegal structures that are not registered with the government because they were built on waterways thereby endangering the lives of our people,” he said.

He, however, stated that the board had given notice to occupants of the illegal structures across the 13 local government areas of the state.

He expressed worry that citizens who registered their houses with the board as residential buildings were using the buildings for commercial purposes.

He cautioned house owners to make use of their properties based on the approval given to them by government, arguing that the state government has served them noticed.

“Some persons who registered their properties as residential buildings are using it for commercial purposes and we will not accept such illegality,” he said.
