A fire outbreak in the early hours of Monday caused extensive damage to sections of Singa Market, one of Kano’s busiest commercial centres.
The fire reportedly started before dawn, spreading rapidly through parts of the market before emergency responders arrived. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed receiving a distress call at approximately 3:16 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters to the scene.
Speaking on the incident, the service’s spokesperson, Saminu Yusif, said firefighting teams worked for several hours to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the market.
“As of about 10 a.m., some sections were still smouldering, while our personnel continued efforts to bring the situation fully under control,” he said.
Yusif added that detailed information on the cause of the fire and the extent of losses would be communicated after preliminary assessments are concluded.
Rising Fire Incidents Raise Concern
That incident, which began in one apartment of a two-storey structure, caused property losses estimated at several millions of naira before firefighters and residents were able to contain the blaze.
Authorities continue to urge residents, traders, and property owners to observe fire safety measures, particularly in densely populated market.
