The Federal Government has issued a flood alert for seven states following rising water levels along the River Niger and River Benue.
According to the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA), the affected states include Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Benue, Adamawa, Niger, and Bayelsa. The agency said recent hydrological assessments indicate a strong likelihood of flooding in parts of these regions.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Director General of NiHSA, Umar Muhammed, said the situation demands vigilance from residents in flood-prone areas and swift action from relevant authorities.
“Our monitoring shows that water levels along the Niger and Benue rivers remain high, posing risks of localised flooding in Kogi, Anambra, and Delta states,” Muhammed said. “We urge communities in these areas to heed official warnings and take preventive measures.”
Muhammed further disclosed that water quality checks carried out during recent flood assessments revealed contamination in several shallow wells, caused by intrusion of floodwater. He called for collaboration among ministries, humanitarian agencies, and local governments to ensure access to safe drinking water for affected residents.
The latest advisory comes amid growing concerns about Nigeria’s flood preparedness and the effects of climate change on vulnerable communities.
NiHSA also announced plans to roll out a Five-Year Strategic Action Plan to enhance its operations through innovation, regional engagement, and improved stakeholder coordination.
“We are strengthening our zonal and field offices to bring our services closer to the people,” Muhammed added. “These initiatives align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which focuses on innovation, accountability, and measurable results.”
