The Federal Government has pledged full support for Dangote Refinery’s plan to increase production capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd), calling the project a “game-changer” for Nigeria and Africa’s energy independence.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, made this known in Lagos at the 19th Africa Downstream Energy Week. He said the government would work closely with the Dangote Group to ensure the refinery’s expansion success.
Lokpobiri noted that the refinery’s growth aligns with the administration’s vision of a liberalized and competitive downstream sector following the removal of fuel subsidies.
“The refinery’s expansion will not just save Nigeria but also strengthen West Africa’s and Africa’s energy security,” he said.
The minister added that subsidy removal and deregulation have improved product availability, attracted private investment, and stabilized the market.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening oil and gas investment, stressing that hydrocarbons remain vital to funding the global energy transition.
“With over 1.4 billion people, Africa cannot afford to ignore oil and gas investment. Expanding production and refining capacity is key to economic growth,” he said.
