The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has launched a major enforcement campaign aimed at curbing street crime, illegal trading, and other public nuisances within Abuja and its surrounding communities.
The initiative, tagged “Operation Sweep Abuja,” was unveiled on Wednesday following a directive from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. According to a statement issued by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the operation is part of a broader strategy to restore order and enhance public safety in the nation’s capital.
Under the new directive, a Joint Task Force comprising security personnel and officials from various FCT departments has been deployed to tackle a range of street-level issues. These include the presence of beggars, illegal street traders, scavengers, and suspected “one-chance” criminals known for preying on unsuspecting commuters.
The enforcement exercise is being carried out in line with the Abuja Environmental Protection Act and other relevant regulations, the statement noted.
Olayinka explained that individuals apprehended during the operation will be properly profiled and handed over to their state governments for reintegration and necessary follow-up actions.
“Security is my job, your job, and our job,” Minister Wike was quoted as saying, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in ensuring a safe and orderly capital city.
