Residents and business owners across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are urging the Federal Government to ensure that the recent increase in electricity generation—from 4,100 megawatts (MW) to 5,700 MW—translates into consistent and reliable power supply.
The Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, announced that Nigeria achieved a historic peak generation of 6,003 MW on March 2, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the country’s power sector. Despite this progress, consumers in areas such as Lugbe, Nyanya, Kubwa, Kuje, and Gwarimpa have reported persistent power outages and voltage fluctuations, affecting both residential and commercial activities.
Residents have expressed concerns over the impact of unreliable electricity on their daily lives and businesses. For instance, Mrs. Ronke Alao, a businesswoman in Lugbe, emphasized the need for the government to leverage the increased generation capacity to improve power supply to homes and businesses. Similarly, Mrs. Blessing Okonofua from Kubwa highlighted the importance of infrastructure development to ensure that the generated power reaches end-users effectively.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has attributed some of the power supply challenges to ongoing road projects and infrastructure limitations. However, residents argue that these explanations are insufficient, given the substantial investments made in the power sector. They are calling for immediate action to address the infrastructural gaps and ensure that the increased generation capacity results in consistent power supply across the FCT.
In response to the growing dissatisfaction, the Federal Government has indicated plans to hold distribution companies accountable for any lapses in service delivery. The Minister of Power has summoned the Chief Executives of AEDC and other distribution companies to address the issues and implement measures to improve power supply.
As the government works towards enhancing the power sector, residents and business owners in the FCT remain hopeful that the recent improvements in generation capacity will lead to tangible benefits in terms of consistent and reliable electricity supply.
