The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced major reconstruction works at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, with passengers advised to arrive early to avoid disruptions.
In a statement issued on Friday, FAAN explained that the renovations, which are part of a wider aviation sector upgrade, may affect traffic flow and flight schedules. Travellers were urged to leave home well in advance of departure times, comply with traffic directives, and make use of designated parking areas.
The reconstruction of MMIA’s Terminal One was approved by the Federal Executive Council in August as part of a ₦900 billion package for aviation projects nationwide. The Lagos terminal project alone will cost ₦712.25 billion and is scheduled for completion in 22 months.
Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, had earlier disclosed that the upgrade involves stripping the terminal down to its structure and rebuilding all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems to meet international standards.
FAAN also appealed for cooperation from the public, stressing that during the reconstruction, only passengers should come to the airport due to limited space. “We appreciate your understanding as we work to deliver a modern facility,” the authority said.
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub, handles millions of passengers annually and remains a critical gateway for both domestic and international travel.
