Participants emphasized the urgent need for strict adherence to established building codes and standards. “Until builders and regulatory bodies take compliance seriously, the nation will continue to witness devastating consequences,” the experts warned.
Favour Oyekan, Summit Chair and President of the Ife Architecture Students Association (IFASA), described architecture as a powerful discipline that “inspires, communicates, and serves society.” She encouraged students to engage with the profession beyond technical skills, focusing also on leadership and innovation.
Prominent figures at the summit included Arc. Mobolaji Adeniyi, President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA); Arc. Olusegun Ladega of Interstate Architects; and Prof. Cordelia Osasona, the first female architecture professor at OAU.
Arc. Adeniyi lauded the summit’s contribution to national development and commended OAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simeon Bamire for his support. Meanwhile, Prof. A.D. Jiboye, Head of the Department of Architecture, highlighted the summit’s role in shaping the academic and professional paths of architecture students.
In his keynote address, Arc. Ladega called for enhanced regulatory oversight and greater public involvement in architectural matters to prevent structural failures.
Addressing gender challenges in the field, Prof. Osasona encouraged female students to persevere and break barriers in the traditionally male-dominated profession, urging them to seize opportunities and demonstrate their capabilities.
A highlight of the summit was the launch of the first edition of the Ife Architecture Journal, a student-driven publication spearheaded by former IFASA president Ojo-Ibukun Timothy. The journal aims to foster research and dialogue among emerging architects.
Several industry leaders were honored for their contributions, including Arc. Adeniyi, Arc. Ladega, Prof. Osasona, and Prof. Jiboye. The summit also recognized faculty and sponsors involved in the Prof. Bayo Amole Architectural Essay Competition, celebrating outstanding student work from OAU and Lead City University.
Additional activities during the event included a community cleanup partnered with PloggingNigeria and a sports competition won by Yellow House. Closing the summit, Oyekan urged all participants to embrace a spirit of transformation: “May today inspire us to move beyond building structures to building a better future.”
