Some engineers have proffered solutions to the incessant flooding being experienced in some parts of the country.
They called for mitigating strategies, including strict adherence to road construction standards; basing road planning and design on international best practices, and financial commitment by the Federal Government to support better guidance on integrated planning and design of roads.
The engineers spoke during the second memorial lecture organised by the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers in honour of a former President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and COREN, Late Chief Samuel Fadaunsi.
The immediate past President of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, Kashim Ali, urged the government to stop selecting contractors based on cheap prices.
“Public authorities responsible for the construction and maintenance of road infrastructure should move away from the ‘cheapest price’ model and select solutions that are cost-effective based not only on price, but also on environmental performance,” he added.
Another engineer, Prof. Adelere Adeniran, while speaking on the impact of flooding on road infrastructure in Nigeria, lamented that “there are road networks all over Nigeria but many are hardly usable.”
The National Chairman of the NIEE, Olalekan Ajani, said the event was organised to honour the late Fadahusi and draw attention to issues affecting the environment from the engineering point of view.
