Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office amid moves by lawmakers to remove him.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, who said further details surrounding the development would be made public later.
The resignation follows an alleged move by some lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Speaker. Reports indicate that the political tension had intensified within the Assembly.
Agbebaku has served as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly since June 2023.
The latest development creates a leadership vacancy in the state legislature, with details yet to emerge on who will take over as acting Speaker or when a new Speaker will be elected.
