Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for 2025. The announcement was made during the ongoing ITU Council meetings in Geneva, Switzerland.
Tijani confirmed his election in a statement shared via his official account on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, expressing gratitude to the ITU leadership and member states for what he described as a recognition of Nigeria’s increasing relevance in global digital governance.
“It is a profound honour to be elected Vice Chair of the ITU Council 2025,” he wrote. “I look forward to working with Chair Cristiana Flutur and fellow council members to further our shared goals for inclusive and sustainable digital development.”
The ITU Council is a key organ of the United Nations agency responsible for global telecommunications policy and digital infrastructure. It operates between plenipotentiary conferences, guiding the agency’s strategic direction and programmatic actions.
Tijani highlighted the significance of his election at a time when global cooperation is crucial to achieving a secure and inclusive digital future. He outlined his commitment to supporting international efforts on issues such as digital infrastructure, access to connectivity, digital literacy, and cybersecurity.
“As Vice Chair, I will advocate for collaborative solutions in building resilient digital systems, promoting trusted public digital infrastructure, and ensuring equitable access to technology, especially for underserved communities,” he stated.
He also linked the appointment to Nigeria’s ongoing push for digital advancement under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that the role offers a platform to both project Nigeria’s voice globally and reinforce commitments at home.
“Our digital priorities from boosting internet penetration in rural areas to empowering young Nigerians with tech skills, align with the ITU’s broader mission of ensuring no one is left behind in the digital revolution,” Tijani added.
The minister’s elevation to this strategic position comes amid Nigeria’s growing participation in international technology diplomacy and digital policy advocacy.
