Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has approved the establishment of a high-level committee tasked with overseeing the creation of new emirates, chiefdoms, and districts across the state.
This move follows the administration’s earlier call for communities to submit memoranda requesting recognition or upgrade to emirate, chiefdom, or district status. The initiative is part of the state government’s broader strategy to enhance grassroots governance, preserve cultural identity, and ensure equitable representation within the traditional institution framework.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado, the committee will carefully evaluate all submissions in line with pre-established guidelines and make recommendations that emphasize fairness, inclusivity, and economic viability.
The committee, comprising a mix of traditional leaders, public officials, and community representatives from across the 20 local government areas, is to be chaired by Alhaji Hamza Koshe Akuyam of Misau LGA. Justice Habibu Idris Shall (rtd.) from Tafawa Balewa LGA will serve as the deputy chairman. Other members include Engr. Salmanu Muhammed (Alkaleri), Alhaji Garba M. Noma (Bauchi), and Mr. Elisha B. Gwamis (Bogoro), among others.
Also appointed are notable figures from various sectors: Professor Ibrahim Garba, a historian from the University of Maiduguri; Hassan Usman El-Yakub SAN, the state’s Attorney General; as well as representatives of religious organizations (JNI and CAN), civil society, and security agencies. Key government officials and permanent secretaries will act as secretaries and co-secretaries for the committee.
The official inauguration of the committee is scheduled for Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the Executive Council Chambers in the Government House, Bauchi.
This initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to fostering unity, cultural pride, and administrative efficiency through inclusive traditional governance structures.
