The Academic Staff Union of Universities’ chapter at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, has strongly denounced the brutal killings in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
In a statement jointly issued by Chairperson Ali Ako and Secretary Daniel Chile on June 24, ASUU-MOAUM described the attack as “one too many,” emphasizing the alarming rise in violent assaults across the region.
ASUU expressed deep concern over the ongoing loss of innocent lives, extensive property destruction, and the pervasive atmosphere of insecurity that threatens the stability of farming communities. They noted that the attack occurred during the peak of the rainy and planting season an especially critical period for farmers who are now facing disruptions to their livelihoods and profound economic uncertainty.
Highlighting the nexus between the violence and food production, the union observed that Benue’s predominantly farming population has been displaced from ancestral lands by armed herders. “This trend poses grave risks to food security not just in Benue, but across the country,” they warned.
ASUU-MOAUM called on federal and state authorities to fulfill their constitutional duty by enhancing protection for all citizens especially those in vulnerable rural settings. They urged security agencies to act swiftly, thoroughly, and impartially to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.
The union also expressed solidarity with the families affected in Yelewata and insisted on the need for immediate humanitarian assistance. They recommended the launch of resettlement and rehabilitation programs to support displaced persons in returning to their communities safely and rebuilding their lives.
Concluding their appeal, ASUU-MOAUM reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to justice, peace, and the protection of human dignity, urging decisive steps to halt the violence that has devastated Benue’s rural communities.
