Housing Development Advocacy Network, HDAN, has appealed to the Federal Government and the 36 state governors to put in place measures that will guarantee provision of affordable houses for the Nigerian Legion after their retirement.
The Network made the appeal in a Press Statement issued to celebrate the 2020 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The Network noted that much has not been done to support the fallen heroes, especially in the area of housing , adding that nothing could be too much to support their families considering their enormous sacrifice for the nation.
The Network also called on all Nigerians to continue to care for the needs of maimed soldiers, the children, widows and other dependents of fallen heroes.
The Network said such gestures would go a long way to encourage the current serving men to put in their best knowing that their futures and those of their families are secured.
The advocacy group also called on the Ministry of Defence to expedite action on the ongoing rehabilitation of military barracks nationwide under the Barracks Intervention Projects to ensure a good living standard for current service men.
There is a huge housing deficits challenge affecting the men of the Nigerian armed forces. Not all of the military operatives and officers are quartered in the barracks due to insufficient houses. The poor remuneration of personnel has also worsened the situation as many of them cannot afford houses of their own.
