In a bid to survive disruptions caused by COVID-19 pandemic, the president of Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Gabriel Ajayi, has called for swift adoption of technology tools, diversification of products and services by practicing architects.

He spoke at a forum organised by the Association of Consulting Architects of Nigeria (ACAN) tagged, “A New Order”. Ajayi said consultants, individuals, businesses and practitioners need to embrace tools, technology and know-how to meet needs of clients in the built environment.

He said: “This is the time for us as architectural consultants to explore, adapt and harness new-age technology in the delivery of professional services and products for sustainability. In the same vein, responding to these needs calls for proper collaboration with other professionals in the built environment.”

The ARCON boss said the council is implementing policies that would enhance the quality of architectural services and create enabling environments.

The Minister, Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, said climate changes has altered environmental conditions where buildings and structures are designed to function.

Adegbite said greenfield development, cement production and fossil fuel combustion all contribute to CO2 emissions in the construction industry.

He also expressed concerns over the effect of climate change on reinforced concrete, which is one of the most widely used materials on earth.

The minister said effects of climate change are evident in the lives of citizens and seen through storm, erosion, flood, heat wave and drought.

Also speaking, ACAN President, Ayoola Onajide, said the forum is aimed at promoting architectural practices at its highest levels through sharing of ideas.

On his part, chairman, Phillips Consulting Limited, Mr. Foluso Phillips, called for digital adaptation, training, re-skilling and up-scaling to meet current trends shaping the world.
