The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast indicating that Akwa Ibom State is expected to experience significant rainfall in 2025, with rainfall days estimated between 250 and 290. This increase in precipitation raises concerns over potential flooding and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
In response, Governor Pastor Umo Eno has called on residents to take active measures in maintaining their environment, emphasizing the importance of regularly clearing drainages, gutters, and other water channels to mitigate the threat of floods and related ecological hazards.
Delivering a message at the May 2025 Government House Monthly Prayer Service held at the Governor’s Lodge in Uyo, the governor cautioned against the careless disposal of waste that leads to blockage of drainage systems. He stressed that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility, urging communities to organize cleanup initiatives to complement government efforts.
“Akwa Ibom has been identified among the states vulnerable to flooding this year, so preparation is crucial. Government will carry out desilting operations, but public cooperation is essential to ensure success,” Governor Eno stated.
Additionally, the governor directed the Ibom Community Watch group to develop plans for monitoring and curbing illegal dumping activities that could obstruct drainage systems. He also expressed compassion for those already affected by natural disasters in the state, assuring them of prompt government support through the distribution of relief materials.
