The African Development Bank has approved a $200 million loan to support Nigeria’s fibre optic expansion and digital skills development, in a move aimed at accelerating the country’s transition into a competitive digital economy.

The funding will support a nationwide programme designed to improve broadband connectivity while equipping millions of Nigerians with critical digital skills needed in today’s technology-driven world.

Bridging Nigeria’s Digital Divide

According to the bank, the initiative will focus on expanding fibre optic infrastructure to underserved and rural communities, where access to reliable internet remains limited.

Nigeria continues to face a significant connectivity gap, which has restricted access to essential services such as digital education, financial inclusion, and e-commerce opportunities.By financing the rollout of thousands of kilometres of fibre cables, the programme is expected to improve internet speed, reliability, and affordability across the country.
